Hands-On Holistic Gardening and Nutritional Development Programs for Schools

One of my greatest joys is having the privilege of cooking and gardening with children in San Diego County schools. Harvest Heroes teaches healthy choices, meal preparation, and the importance of a balanced diet while instilling life skills and nutritional knowledge. The initiative also cultivates in students a love for nature through gardening and the pride of eating and sharing their harvest.

If you’re an educator or school administrator who is interested in empowering students with life-changing knowledge and skills that prevent diet-related diseases and foster healthier lifestyles, please email Angie to get more information about Harvest Heroes.

Previous and Current Projects

Garden-to-Cafe

San Diegos Garden-to-Table School Lunch Program

Planting an outdoor garden combined with tower gardens, students from Harriet Tubman Charter School learned basic gardening skills and the value of eating nutritional foods. Additionally, they experienced the pride of eating and sharing the food they grew. Helping one of the students speak at Tedex Kids about her Community Garden design was a highlight of 2023.

Farm To School California schools pilot

State Approved School Garden-to-Table Pilot Program

Angie’s Real Food initiated and implemented the pilot program for this garden-to-table curriculum which has been approved for adaptation throughout the state.

Harvest-to-Table Salad Parties

Salad Bar at Harriet Tubman Charter

In addition to growing their own greens, students in grades 5 and 7 at Harriet Tubman Charter School cultivated a passion for gardening. Their talents were on full display at the salad bar party where they served their harvest along with homemade salad dressings.

Deheasa Charter Indoor Garden Program

Middle School Science Curriculum

Dehesa Charter incorporated an indoor tower garden into their science curriculum for a hands-on learning experience. Learning the growth process as well as nutrition is a win win for every student!

Rotary Club Partnerships

Community and School Grant-funded Projects

Local Rotary Club Chapters are a great resource for grant-funded community and school projects. I have worked with the Rotary Club to develop the La Mesa Community Garden, take students on field trips to local farms, plant a campus strawberry patch, and more. Contact me to explore grant-sponsored opportunities for your school, community, or business.

Sonshine Haven Cooking Camps

Nutritional Cooking Class for Kids

One of the best ways to get kids to eat their veggies is to get them involved in cooking them. During summer camp, students learned all about nutrition and how to make their veggies extra tasty with seasonings and homemade toppings. This has developed into a salad bar meal prep class for the camp’s lunch program.
