Practical Resolutions

You either are one of those people who excitedly set New Year’s Resolutions, or else like me, passionately reject the idea.

Studies show that people fail colossally at Resolutions.

WHY? Here a few examples:

Ambiguous goals like "get fit" or "save money" lack direction.

Setting unattainable goals like "lose 30 pounds in a month" leads to discouragement.

Without someone or something holding you accountable, it’s easy to lose motivation.

Trying to change too many things at once becomes overwhelming.

Setting a good resolution involves clarity, achievability, and alignment with your personal values or goals.

Here’s a guide to creating resolutions that stick:

A standard acronym that overlaps in business and personal goals is the term ”SMART”-

Specific: Clear and well-defined.

Measurable: Include criteria for tracking progress.

Achievable: Realistic given your current resources and time.

Relevant: Align with your values and priorities.

Time-bound: Set a deadline or timeframe.

Breaking these down, we start with specifics with actionable steps and timelines for accountability. Doing any program with a buddy, coach or your household is proven to increase your chances of success.

When you work with a professional, and really lean in, at points of setback, you will be encouraged with specifics to work yourself out of the setback to stay on track.

Realistic Goals should be measurable within a reasonable amount of time.

Here are a couple of examples in each common category to get you started:

  1. Health:

    • Walk 20 minutes a day, 5 times a week.

    • Replace sugary drinks with water.

  2. Career/Education:

    • Complete one professional certification by June.

    • Read one book related to your field each month.

  3. Finances:

    • Create and stick to a monthly budget.

    • Pay off one small debt by April.

  4. Relationships:

    • Call or visit a loved one weekly.

    • Plan a date night twice a month.

  5. Personal Growth:

    • Meditate for 10 minutes daily.

    • Volunteer at a local organization once a month.

Would you benefit from a Coach or other professional?

Adherence rates are proven!

  1. Studies show that individuals in group coaching settings achieve their goals 76% more effectively than those working alone. Accountability within a group increases commitment to action plans.

  2. Group participants are 50% more likely to adhere to weekly action steps due to peer motivation.

  3. Group support enhances sustainability of habits, with participants maintaining 70% adherence six months after the coaching period.

    How it works:

    • Sharing goals creates a social contract, making participants more likely to follow through. A great many examples can be listed here. Two long standing groups that continue to prove success year after year are Weight Watchers and Alcoholics Anonymous.

    • These groups provide emotional encouragement. Seeing others' progress can reignite motivation. Learning from peers offers diverse strategies and perspectives. Group discussions clarify doubts and reinforce learning.
